The Mabel Dress

The Mabel Dress is a vision in polka dots! A classic 70's shape, it features a black velvet bodice, lace edging, and a high bust line giving it that iconic 70's silhouette. The polka dot skirt and puff sleeves contrast against the black velvet of the jewelled belt. This dress is made in the UK by the brand "Marion Donaldson". In perfect vintage condition.

Marion Donaldson is widely credited with introducing the spirit of Swinging London to Glasgow in the mid‑1960s. The label was founded in 1966 by newly married David and Marion Donaldson, both just 22 years old, with only £50 in start‑up capital, yet within three years the business had reached the equivalent of £1,000,000 in turnover. All design and manufacturing took place in Glasgow, but the brand quickly built a nationwide presence, supplying major retailers such as Fenwick’s of New Bond Street. From the beginning, the company made extensive use of Liberty fabrics, a partnership that grew so strong that Marion Donaldson became Liberty’s largest UK customer. The label continued to trade until 1999, producing around 1,000 garments each week at its peak.
